As is apparent from the name of this field, industrial microbiology plays an important role in meeting our needs through microorganisms. An applied field of microbiology, industrial microbiology seeks to utilize microorganisms for the purpose of producing a host of end products in mass scale, for the benefit of mankind. The microorganisms are suitably screened, improved upon, managed and then finally put for production. The products are all sustainably produced through environment friendly principles and in a green way. This is one of those fields that are in the forefront of developments taking place in biological sciences and engineering. A career in industrial microbiology is thus a worthwhile one for anyone with an interest in biological sciences.
Eligibility and course duration
Bachelors degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Botany or other related fields with minimum 55% marks in aggregate. Admissions are through entrance tests.
Duration of this postgraduate program is 2 years.
More about the course
Microorganisms have a lot of utility for mankind. Many of the drugs, medicines, vaccines, chemicals and even fuels are obtained through them. Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, algae and protozoa process materials by applying engineering and scientific principles to produce the desired end products. The field of industrial microbiology has led to discovery of new organisms and in developing new antibiotics. It has applications in baking by using yeasts, in producing alcohol and bio-fuels too.
From the most fundamental to the state of the art topics, the course provides you with an in-depth study of the industrial applications of microbiology. Your knowledge about molecular biology and microbiology gets enhanced through this course. The course follows a hands-on approach in providing you with the necessary skills and expertise and thus make you readily employable by the industries. A few of the topics that are covered in this course are Microbial Biotechnology, DNA Data Mining, Bioremediation, Molecular Genetics, Genomics and Fermentation Biotechnology.
Prospects as an Industrial Microbiologist
This course helps you get into various career paths. You can opt to pursue a PhD and opt for a research and development career in one of the research labs. Or you can opt for opportunities in the industries such as, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food and beverage, agriculture, chemical, waste water treatment, environmental control, oil recovery and mining activities. Getting into a teaching career is also one of the options for an industrial microbiologist. Good many discoveries of drugs and vaccines are credited to industrial microbiologists.
