Environmental toxicology is a field of study that tells us how the environment and every living being is affected due to the harmful effects of toxic chemicals. It's all about how the environment absorbs those toxic chemicals that are mainly produced by man, how they are circulated through the ecosystem and how plants and animals including us humans get to metabolize those causing diseases, birth defects and poisoning. Through these studies we can find the cure for such diseases and defects or could prevent them altogether. Considering that mankind has degraded the environment through large-scale deforestation and thoughtless urbanization in the name of progress, the environment today is largely at our mercy. It's for us to restore it back and M.Phil Environmental Toxicology is a step in that direction.

More about the course
Environmental toxicology is a specialized field. The courses on the subject are very much instrumental in learning how we are contaminating the environment with various toxins/pollutants and how they got there. One gets to learn about how these toxins or pollutants get transported through the ecosystem and are metabolized by the living organisms, ultimately affecting them. Toxics in food and water are among the some of the most focused topics that are discussed. Among the various sub-topics in environmental toxicology are cellular and molecular toxicology, ecotoxicology, food and nutritional toxicology, risk assessment management and so on. For your M.Phil program you can take any of the areas for your research work and a dissertation has to be written based on your work. Based on the dissertation submitted at the end of the course a viva-voce is conducted.
Jobs and opportunities
Considering that the environment has degraded a lot and there seems no end to that process, there's excellent job opportunity for environmental toxicologists. Most of the jobs in this field are in the government sector, in ministries and departments specially meant for environment protection. They are into taking samples, evaluating them and also into formulating environmental policies. Environmental toxicologists are also into jobs that require them to test new chemical and pharmaceutical products from the perspective of environment as well as health safety. Undertaking PhD, a career in research or teaching is also one can opt for.
