Operations research – an overview
Operations or Operational Research is a discipline very much related to the field of mathematics. It uses advanced analytical techniques to improve upon the decision making process. It is known by various names such as, management science, decision science and has properties similar to industrial engineering and operations management. The main aim of operations research is to optimize production, improve upon services and quality of products. Thus it helps in maximising profits, cut down on losses, bottlenecks and provide the best products and services to customers, efficiently. Even though it all began with military preparations during the World War II, today almost every industry encompasses operations research in its regular schedule.
Eligibility criteria and duration
You should be 10+2 pass with Maths, Physics and Chemistry from a recognized board. Good skills in statistics and an analytical mind is what you require for this program.
Duration of this undergraduate program is 3 years.
More about operations research
Operations research involves problem solving techniques that are used to improve decision making and bring in efficiency. It uses various techniques such as computer simulation, queuing theory, optimisation, problem structuring, probability, statistics and other mathematical models. It puts your sound understanding and knowledge of the key areas of statistics and mathematics to good use in optimising decisions. The course focuses on learning through abstract mathematical concepts, deductive reasoning and logical arguments. It gives you a good grounding in mathematical theories, concepts and the various techniques. By learning these techniques and putting them to good use, researchers can draw conclusions from their observations of the varied data. Operations research helps in a wide array of fields. For example, airlines uses it to schedule their fleets or aircrew. Factories use them to manage production and so on.
Opportunities in operations research
Many after graduating from this course opt for M.Sc Operations Research or a related field. Beyond that one can either join research programs like M.Phil/Phd or go for employment. Most industries these days are using the fruits of this discipline to optimize their production and make the best use of their resources, thus improving upon their profitability margins. As such, operations research analysts are in demand by most industries and production centres. Other than in the industries they are in demand by the financial services sector, meteorological offices, organizations dealing with data and statistics, transportation sector, airlines, shipping industry and in organizations and offices for staff related scheduling.
