Bachelor of Food Technology deals with food engineering and food sciences. It deals with various food processing, packaging and storage techniques. It involves studying the nutritive values of food and their chemical composition. By studying the microbiology of food and food products, a food technologist gets to understand them in the raw form. A food technologist is also known by the name of food technocrat and food scientist. A course in food technology is very appropriate for those who are looking for a career in food related industries. Eligibility and course duration

Should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Maths or Biology with minimum 55% marks in aggregate. Students are admitted to this course through entrance tests like the JEE Mains.

Over the years, because of modernization and improvement in technology, the food processing industry has been growing very rapidly. This course is all the more useful to cope up with the challenges in the food processing industry and in feeding the ever increasing global population. The course helps in understanding the dynamics of food engineering that enables us in doing value addition to a variety of food and food products. Food technology courses are practical oriented courses. As such, other than the usual summer training, students have to undergo industrial training at the end of the course as part of their project work.

Job opportunities

Most of the jobs in this field are in the food processing industries. There are numerous opportunities in areas such as processing, packaging, storage, nutrition and food research. Students also gain skills in entrepreneurship and in opening their own food units. There are also opportunities to study further in this field by doing postgraduate courses such as M.Tech. One can also opt for research in this field. There are jobs in both the private and the public sector. There are numerous private companies in this field, who are into fruits and vegetable processing, dairy products, bakery, confectioneries and food processing equipment manufacturing. FCI or Food Corporation of India is one of the public sector enterprises which is also into this business. Other than in food processing these technologists or scientists are employed in areas like quality assurance, research and development.
