Petroleum refining and petrochemicals engineering is a highly lucrative field. A nation's economy depends a lot upon its petroleum reserves and the economic activities based on it. It's through the chemical refining processes that we are able to convert the black gold extracted from the depths of earth into highly useful products such as petrol, diesel, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), kerosene, jet fuel, etc. Petroleum and natural gas are also very much used in producing chemical compounds such as olefins and aromatics such as benzene, toluene and xylene isomers. The petrochemicals thus derived are used for producing hundreds of useful products such as solvents, fibres, elastomers, plastics, detergents, lubricants, adhesives, gels and many more.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 with physics, chemistry and math with at least 60% marks. Selections are through entrance exams like JEE Mains and based on merit.
Duration of the course is 4 years.
More about the course
Petroleum refining and petrochemicals is a branch of chemical engineering in which you study about the production of petroleum, the refining processes and the production of petroleum based chemical products that have hundreds of different uses and applications. To become an engineer in this field you will be studying about exploration of petroleum and extracting it from the depths of our planet. You will be studying about designing and development of processes and equipment for better extraction of the crude oil. You will be also into developing finer refining processes and researching more and more applications for the derived petrochemicals. You will be learning about the upstream and the downstream sectors. The upstream sector concerns with oil exploration and the associated processes. Whereas for the downstream sector you will be studying about the processes involved in refining, producing new chemical compounds and the research work done for developing new processes and equipment.
As petroleum is one of the most vital sources of energy for the whole world, it provides for some of the best paying careers in the industry. There are a good many private and public sector companies in the country that are involved in the refining business. There are also some excellent opportunities in the Gulf countries which have a rich reserve of petroleum. Some of the biggest refineries are located in this region and provide for very rewarding careers. You can also get yourself enrolled in postgraduate programs like M.E./M.Tech/MS or MBA for better prospects.
