Avionics – an overview
The field of avionics is related with aviation, aerospace and satellite systems. Avionics is in fact aviation electronics. In an aircraft, everything that concerns with the electrical system, instrumentation, electronics, navigation and the communication systems, fall under the purview of avionics. Every modern aircraft, satellite or spacecraft these days have a plethora of avionic equipment for safe and effective flight. As an avionics engineer, you will be responsible for maintaining these equipment and systems flight worthy. You are also responsible for the proper functioning of the numerous computer systems that a modern aircraft has these days. Equipment monitoring weather and anti-collision devices are for example, part of avionics.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in any of the engineering branches such as, Aerospace, Aeronautical, Avionics, Electronics, Instrumentation , Electrical, Communication, etc. Admissions are based on merit. One needs to appear for entrance tests.
Duration of this postgraduate program is 2 years.
More about this course
In this course you get to learn everything about the avionic systems used in a modern aircraft. You get to learn the design and development principles of each and every avionic equipment fitted in the aircraft. You get to understand the role of avionics in getting the aircraft to fly stably, even when there are external disturbances. The role of avionics is not limited to aircrafts or other airborne crafts like helicopters alone. They are also of importance in spacecrafts and in man-made satellites. Other than the electricals and instrumentation, you also learn about communication principles, navigation and guidance systems and the various equipment associated with them. You also get to understand the role of avionics in flight safety.
Job prospects in avionics
An avionics engineer gets jobs mainly in the aircraft and the aerospace industry. Both these field are technology intensive. With advancement in technology the role of avionics is finding an increasing share in aviation and aerospace. Thus, with time, the opportunities for avionics engineers are likely to be greater in this field. An avionics engineer can find jobs both in the private and the government sector. One can also join the Indian Airforce as an avionics officer and have a very dynamic and vibrant career. Those who are eager to get into research in this field can opt for research programs like PhD. An exciting career in teaching is also what many can look into, if you have a passion for academics.
