Overview
Geology or earth sciences studies the Earth, its origin, history and the rocks it is made up of. The field of geology is not only restricted to the study of Earth but also studies other celestial bodies like Moon, Mars, meteorites, etc. It is a very valuable field of study as it helps us in exploration and extraction of mineral resources, hydrocarbons like oil, gas, coal and also in evaluating and channelizing our water resources spread across lakes, rivers and oceans. Research in the field of geology also helps us in understanding the climatic changes affecting Earth and in dealing with natural disasters like earthquakes, volcanoes, floods plaguing Earth from time to time.
Eligibility criteria
Postgraduate degree in geology or other fields related to Earth sciences. Admissions are through entrance exams.
Course duration
Duration of the course program is 1 year, but may take another 6 to 12 months to complete the thesis and submit it.
More about the course
M.Phil Geology being a research oriented course, helps us in our understanding of our planet Earth. It vastly improves upon our knowledge of the origin and the composition of Earth. The course helps in learning various research methodologies. One comes to learn of the numerous methods that are used by geologists to unravel the mysteries of Earth. Through field observations, laboratory tests and numerical modelling techniques one comes to understand the various processes that are continuously taking place inside the Earth and its surface. As geologists you also get to do research work and study soils, landscapes, terrains, rivers and glaciers too. Some of the areas of research in this field are: volcanoes, tectonics, mineral resources, geophysics, borehole research, hydrogeology, planetary geology, earthquake studies, paleobiology, paleoenvironment and paleoclimateology.
Jobs and opportunities
Geologists have an important role to play in various sectors such as remote sensing, mineral and petroleum exploration, mining, agriculture, urban planning and development and in many environment related studies. After this course one can either go for a full-fledged PhD or opt for employment in any of the relevant organizations. Other than research based work there are many government jobs in this sector in fields such as environment studies, rural development and population studies. Those looking for a career in research or academics, for them it is advisable that you first complete your PhD before joining a college or university as a lecturer.
