M.Plan. or Masters in Planning is a post graduate level course with different specializations like Urban & Regional Planning, Transportation Planning, Environmental Planning, Housing with Regional Planning, etc.
Candidates develop their in depth knowledge about urbanization processes, challenges of urbanization, planning approaches, governance & development, land use planning and much more. The details about socio-economic and environmental issues of urban and regional areas are also included in the course.
In specialization of Housing with Regional Planning, candidates learn about orderly development of areas, to design a master plan and available tools to implement their ideas for regional developments.
Through this course, candidates get skill to contribute efficiently for developing the area by better access to land.
Admission Procedure
The admission procedure includes submission of duly filled form enclosed with all other required documents as very first step. Some institutes offer seats on merit basis and conduct interview sessions for selected candidates.
Some institutes conduct entrance examination and offers seat to candidate performing well in that.
Eligibility
As the course is related to architecture and planning, candidates having graduation degree in Architecture or Planning are eligible for this course. Other options are B. Tech/ BE in Civil and candidates from these fields are also allowed to pursue this course.
A post graduate from Sociology/ Geography/ Economics can also pursue this as their dual specialization.
The minimum qualifying marks varies from 55-60%.
Duration
The duration for this course is 2 years and these 2 years are divided into 4 semesters.
Further study options
After completion of this course, candidates can enroll themselves for PhD. course which is a research based degree where candidates get an opportunity to conduct their own research in the field of their own interest.
Course highlights
The course starts with basic topics like Planning Techniques, Planning History and Theory, Housing Environments and Planning, Basic Planning Techniques, etc. Each semester also includes practical lab session of site planning, area appreciation, etc.
The later of course includes study about Infrastructure Planning, Advanced Planning Techniques and Urban Heritage Conservation.
Some part of management is also included in the course which helps candidates to understand about Project Planning and Management.
The last part of course includes professional practice for planners and dissertation.
