Power electronics – An overview
The field of power electronics is playing a very important role in providing us with electrical energy for our daily needs in industries, offices and at home. To meet the ever increasing demand for electrical energy, it is no more sufficient to use conventional sources of energy. Demand for energy is increasing, but fossil fuels are depleting. It is thus essential to use renewable sources of energy for producing electrical power. Moreover, because of the rapid developments in electronics and its applications, different kinds of power are required. Some may require AC, others might use DC. Our computers get AC as input, but the internal devices use DC of different ratings. Hence, for conversion and controlling of power, power electronics is very much essential.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in electronics, electrical or related engineering fields. Admissions are through GATE score and entrance exams.
Duration of this postgraduate course is 2 years.
More about the course
This postgraduate program provides engineering graduates with the knowledge of power electronics and its various applications in power system engineering, electrical drives, electrical machines and electronic equipments. They get to understand the synergy between power electronics and power systems and how that interfacing is important to have a better energy scenario. Power electronics is after all taking centre stage in every respect, whether domestic, industrial or commercial. In every electronic equipment, from the ordinary television to massive convertors in power stations, power electronics plays a crucial role. It is even playing an important role in aerospace applications. Other than classroom teaching, the students get to experience laboratory works, projects and visits to industrial units and power stations.
