Overview – Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is a recent entrant among the engineering fields. Even then it is making waves in a number of fields. Nanotechnology is gaining immense importance in a variety of fields such as electronics, healthcare, consumer products, manufacturing, medicines, food and many others. Through nanotechnology, matters or materials are manipulated at minutest of scales, in nanometers. This helps in producing products that are much better, efficient and cost effective. It also helps in making the matter stronger and durable. Future potential of this field is immense.
Eligibility
B.E./B.Tech or AMIE degree in any of the these engineering fields like, Mechanical, Industrial, Production, Aeronautical, Nanotechnology, Biomedical, Biotechnology, Petrochemical, Electronics, Chemical and a few others. Candidates with M.Sc in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science and Biochemistry are also eligible. Marks should be above 50% in aggregate. Admissions are through GATE or entrance tests.
Course duration
Duration of this postgraduate degree course is 2 years.
More about the course
A multi-disciplinary field, one has to have a solid understanding of the basics of many different engineering and science disciplines. Nanotechnology is a kind of confluence of science, technology and engineering. One can work in different areas of nanotechnology, but that depends upon your engineering stream in graduation or field of specialization in M.Sc. this is one postgraduate program that is less dependent on theory classes. Students get opportunities for project works, internships, seminars and get to participate in research programs. Nanotechnology is getting popular with budding scientists as it is one of the leading subjects in academics and research. This course helps you learn how to develop products in the nano range in various fields. You also get to learn of the future capabilities and applications of nanotechnology that are likely to benefit mankind.
Job opportunities in nanotechnology
Compared to the western countries, nanotechnology is still at a nascent stage in India. A number of research labs in the country are working on this exciting field. Some of them are located in IISc, TIFR and the IITs. Foreign countries, especially US and a few European countries offer exciting opportunities for research in this field. A number of fields, both in India and abroad have already taken to this technology. Those fields that provide for opportunities to budding engineers and scientists are electronics, pharmaceuticals, energy generation, computing, textiles, aviation and so on. Many opt for a PhD program in this field after undergoing this course.
