M.Tech is a Masters degree in Technological field. The specialization in
'Information Retrieval' is completely related to information searching/ retrieving tools, their applications, efficiency, etc.

Eligibility
M.Tech being a Masters degree, candidates holding bachelors degree with specialization in Computer science, Information technology, Computer Application, etc are eligible for this course. The minimum qualifying marks may vary from one institute to another and need to be checked before submission of application form.
Some institutes do not add any age restriction in eligibility criteria and thus keep it available for any age group even for professionals.
Duration
The duration for this course is 2 years after graduation in technical field like B.Tech or B.E. The duration can be 4 or 5 years if pursued after 12th as integrated course. It is 3 yeas if pursued after Diploma in same specialization.

Apart from that, there is a national level entrance test names as GATE in which if a candidates secures good scores, he or she can get admission in top institutes like IITs, NIT, etc.

After completion of this course, interested candidates can pursue PhD.- a research based doctoral course in Information Retrieval. This will give them an opportunity to read about many researches conducted in their field and to conduct their own research.

The initial part of course includes topics like Boolean model of information retrieval, Tokenization, Normalization, Dictionaries and tolerant retrieval. Candidates also learn about Index construction and compression, vector space model, Data comparison, Evolution of information retrieval and XML Retrieval in detail. Language models for information retrieval like unigram model, Text classification (Content based and Request oriented) are important part of the syllabus.
