Overview
Automation to a great extent and robotics to a smaller extent is taking over the world by storm. More and more industries, manufacturing units, healthcare, etc. are getting automated. Automation is resulting in greater efficiency, higher production, better quality and a host of other benefits. It is because of the instrumentation and control engineering, it has been possible to achieve automation in such large scale. The instrumentation part helps in monitoring the different parameters by measuring them, whereas control engineering helps in getting the desired performance by controlling the parameters. Automated systems are thus configured by applying principles and techniques from instrumentation and control engineering.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 from a recognized board with Physics, Math and Chemistry as compulsory papers. Aggregate marks in 10+2 should be more than 50%. Admissions are through entrance tests like the JEE Mains.
Duration of this undergraduate program is 4 years.
More about the course
Instrumentation and control engineering are playing a very effective role in today's industries. Measuring the parameters of a process and thus controlling the process variables, enables us to have a control over the process output. It is through sensors that the performance of a system or parameters is monitored. The measurements are then fed to a feedback device that helps in correcting the performance of the device or system. The processes are thus kept under control. A multi-disciplinary field, you get to study aspects from electrical, electronics, computer and mechanical engineering. You get to learn formulating, designing, developing and installing measuring equipment that will help monitor and control the complete process. You learn about automation processes that are very suitable for certain industries, where production takes place on a large scale and how aspects such as reliability, optimization, stability and safety get improved.
Job opportunities
Instrumentation and control engineers are required in almost every profession or industry that has got something to do with automation. Automation is still a new concept in the country. But in the western world automation is more of a norm and is quite popular too. As such, many after completing graduation, head for US and the European countries for postgraduate studies and jobs. Those with proficiency in this field also get opportunities for research work. One can do a postgraduate course by joining a M.Tech or MS program. There are opportunities for joining PhD programs too, as and when you get qualified for the same.
