Product designing and developing is an integral part of every manufacturing process. A product before being put for production is first suitably designed so as to fulfil the criteria from every angle of manufacturing as well as use. Product designing is an integral part as almost every sector uses it, let it be household goods, consumer durables, automobiles, aeroplanes, spacecraft, medical equipment, sports goods, computers, mobiles, machines, tools etc. A course in product design and manufacturing thus provides you with the finer details in designing and developing a product. It does so by providing you a comprehensive training on the engineering design principles and the manufacturing processes.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in mechanical, industrial, production, manufacturing, automobile or other related fields of engineering with not less than 50% marks. The admissions are done on the basis of GATE score or entrance tests.
Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
The main aim of the course in product design and manufacturing is to imbibe you with creative skills in the field of design. A product has to be designed keeping in view various aspects, such as structural, ergonomic and aesthetics. In this course you get to learn designing from the structural point of view as well as taking in consideration the ergonomics, aesthetics and economics of manufacturing. From non-traditional machining processes to advance manufacturing practices, you get to understand them all. Among the topics that you get to study are product design and development, materials and manufacturing technology, CAD, CAM, applied ergonomics and modelling & simulation. Quality & reliability engineering and virtual design & manufacturing are a few electives.
Jobs and opportunities
Considering the pace of industrialization going on in the country, product designing and manufacturing has a bright outlook in terms of employment opportunities. Product design engineers are required in every field of manufacturing from a simple drawing pin to a complex space-shuttle. Most industries these days are very conscious about how their product should look and appear, as such they invest heavily in designing and development. Other than in manufacturing, design engineers can also have a career, researching extensively the current design trends and future design possibilities. You can be employed as a design engineer, manufacturing engineer, research & development engineer, automotive engineer and so on. You can find jobs in a host of companies. If research interests you, you also have the opportunity to undertake a PhD program.
