Overview
Like most other engineering sciences, chemistry too plays an important role in the development of an economy. It makes us available new and improved materials that can be put to various engineering applications. The scope in this field is immense as tremendous amount of research is being carried out to develop materials that will be able to satisfy present and future engineering needs. The field of chemistry has applications in diverse fields ranging from petroleum, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, agriculture, food, metallurgy, mineralogy, energy, biotechnology and many more. The rapid developments in plastics, polymers and composite materials that we are seeing today, is a gift of this field only. For those with an interest in chemistry, this is an appropriate field of study.
Eligibility and course duration
Should have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with at least 50% marks in aggregate. Admissions are through entrance tests and merit.
Duration of the course is 4 years.
More about the course
An undergraduate engineering course, it helps in developing your understanding of the various chemical products, phenomenon, chemical processes and their industrial applications in varied fields. You learn about designing, development and running of chemical plants. You come to understand how modern chemical industries operate and help in generating wealth for the nation. Aspects related to manufacturing chemicals, environment effects and the safety of the people handling them are covered too. Other than the general/common topics that you will be studying, some of the subject specific topics are organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, fluid mechanics, chemical process calculations, computational chemistry, environmental & industrial chemistry, advance polymer chemistry, spectroscopy, petrochemicals and a few more.
Job opportunities
After completing this course one can get into a number of areas. Chemical industry, petrochemicals, oil & gas production, energy production, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food processing, plastics, polymers, agrochemical, metallurgy and geochemical are some such fields. Depending upon one's area of interest, one can get into processing, manufacturing or into operations. There are also opportunities in designing and construction of large scale chemical plants. A lot of stress is on research, in this field. There are various research positions available both with the private as well as in government research and development labs. Opportunities are arising in new domains such as biotechnology and nanotechnology. If one desires, one can go for further studies that includes M.E/M.Tech and PhD. There are a good many teaching jobs too in this field.
