overview
World over with increasing population and depleting water resources, there is an increasing need for water. Other than increasing domestic use, there's a heavy demand for water by the agricultural and the industrial sector. Indiscriminate use of water has led to depleting resources as well as pollution and contamination of water bodies. It is the need of the hour to manage our water resources well and to see that the water we consume for our varied needs is free from contamination or pollutants. Thus, water resources engineers play a very important role in managing water resources. They ensure that everyone is provided with clean and uncontaminated water for drinking and washing. The need for water for irrigation or for industrial use is also taken care by them.
Eligibility and course duration
Graduates from civil engineering, geological engineering and other related branches are eligible to apply. Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
The main aim of the course is to produce scientists and engineers who will have knowledge and skills in designing, constructing and maintaining the water management systems. Through these courses one learns how to design a new system or an equipment needed to manage a water resource. You get to learn the working principles and construction of water or sewage treatment plants. You learn about tapping water from underground wells and natural springs. The emphasis is on increasing the effectiveness of the existing facilities and improve upon their efficiency. Water resources engineers also learn about the government regulations with respect to managing water resources and the environment.
Some of the areas that this course focuses upon are groundwater resources management, hydraulic engineering, geohydrology, river basin management, sanitary engineering, water quality management, financial management, environmental impacts of water resources projects and government policies related to such projects.
Job opportunities
Water resources engineers and scientists mostly have opportunities in government bodies that oversee the effective management of the water resources. They are often employed by large engineering projects involving construction of dams, canals, water reservoirs, etc. With demand for water ever increasing, there is an increased demand for professionals trained in this field to develop more such water resources projects and maintain them. This is a useful course for professionals desirous of getting into government institutions responsible for planning and implementing such projects. There are also opportunities for doing PhD. One can also opt for a career in teaching.
