Overview
Thermal engineering is all about flow of fluids and the process of heat transfer in thermal energy systems. It mainly deals with heating and cooling of equipment, enclosed environment or a system. Fluid flow and thermal engineering has numerous industrial applications such as in air conditioning, refrigeration, cryogenic engineering, etc. The current emphasis is on making thermal energy systems more efficient by reducing the thermal losses. The focus is also on designing and developing new systems by exploring new areas and applications. The course program is very relevant for current industries, as it covers a broad range of topics within the domain of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E/B.Tech from a recognized university with at least 60% marks in aggregate. Degree should be either in mechanical, automobile, aerospace, chemical or other related engineering branches. Admissions are through GATE score or through entrance exams.
The duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
This is a very suitable course for engineers from the mechanical stream who want to broaden their knowledge about advanced thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer. The course helps in developing competency in computing and analyzing the heat and fluid flow systems through experimental methods. Thermal engineering and fluid mechanics plays an important role in power generation and other heat transfer processes. Through laboratory experiments you get to understand the heat and fluid flow process a lot better. You gain a better insight of the applications of thermal engineering in the real world. Based on the concepts of fluid flow and heat transfer there are many applications such as gas turbines, wind turbines, compressors, heat engines, internal combustion engines, aircraft engines, heat pumps and plenty more.
Job opportunities
The field of fluids and thermal engineering has numerous applications such as in power generation, air conditioning & refrigeration, aviation, rockets and missile development, cryogenic engineering and the automobile industry. The HVAC industry that stands for heating, ventilation and air conditioning is principally based on the concepts of thermal and fluid engineering. Thermal engineers have a role to play in every industry including the electronics industry that have got something to with heat transfer, heating or cooling. Based on one's area of interest, one can work either in the industries or have a research oriented or teaching job. There are also opportunities for undergoing PhD too.
