Overview
CNC machines or computer aided manufacturing (CAM) is taking the manufacturing world by storm. More and more manufacturing industries across the world are integrating computers into their manufacturing processes. The machines thus integrated are called Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. The advent of CAM along with Computer Aided Design has resulted in marked improvement in efficiency and quality of manufacturing. It has also resulted in less human intervention, chances of error, as a result are markedly reduced. Our country being a developing one, has just taken to this technology. The responses from the industry have been positive. In the coming years more and more industrial units are likely to adopt CAM, thus creating endless opportunities for engineers proficient in this field.
Eligibility an course duration
B.E/B.Tech in mechanical, manufacturing, production, industrial, automobile, mechatronics or aeronautical engineering. Admissions are through GATE or entrance exams.
Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about computer aided manufacturing
As is understood from its name, computed aided manufacturing is an automated manufacturing process where technology in the form of computer software is integrated with the machines. The machines and the complete manufacturing process are in turn controlled by the software. Other than CAM, computer aided design (CAD) is used for the designing process and it works in tandem with the manufacturing process. Both these computer assisted processes have resulted in much savings in energy, man-hours, raw material and has improved the production efficiency. CAM is also used for other operations in the manufacturing plant like management, planning, storage, transportation, material tracking, inventory control and so on.
The topics that you mostly study in this course are Numerical Methods in Mechanical Engineering, Software Engineering, Finite Element Methods, Continuum Mechanics, Multibody Dynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Machine Design Process and a few more.
Job opportunities
Even though CAM makes much of the labour force redundant, because of the use of technology, it needs skilled manufacturing professionals to design, develop, simulate and optimize the various processes associated with it. There is a wide scope for employment in this field as a number of industries and manufacturing plants are taking to CAD and CAM in a big way. In fact the automotive industry, tool and die making industry, heavy engineering and the industrial equipment industry is into this technology since a long time. The course is also beneficial if you are seeking to do a PhD in future.
