Introduction
PhD. is the abbreviated form of 'Doctor of Philosophy'. It is a research based degree where enrolled candidates first study about the topic in detail through available resources and literature and then conduct their own research with the help of their supervisor.
The specialization 'Marathi' deals with complete knowledge of Marathi language, literature, culture, history, etc. Marathi is predominantly used in Maharashtra state of India and some parts of Goa. It is considered as one of the official languages in these 2 states hence to get a good government job; candidates should be well versed with Marathi.
Eligibility
Candidates possessing Masters Degree in Marathi or related stream like MA in Marathi, M.Phil in Marathi, are eligible for this course. In some special cases, prior knowledge of Marathi (but not specialized in Marathi) are also allowed to enroll for PhD in Marathi.
Admission Procedure
For admission in PhD, candidates can have many options like-
- Through national level entrance tests- In this case, they will get stipend for at least 5 years.
- Through institute level entrance test- There are some reputed government affiliated institutes conduct their own entrance examinations for PhD.
- Direct admission- Here candidates approach the supervisor and if supervisor likes their SOP, he may accept them for PhD.

The duration for this course ranges between 3-5 years.

After PhD, candidates get honored by Doctors degree which is considered as the highest degree in any specialization. If a candidate is still interested to pursue higher studies, he or she can go for some short term related course like for typing, personality development, etc.
