M.Phil in Aquaculture provides you with the opportunities to either continue with a research based job or you work in the fisheries industries itself.

Eligibility and course duration


Postgraduation in fisheries, marine biology, zoology, aquatic biology, aquaculture, fish processing or other related fields with at least 55% marks. Admissions are through entrance tests and possibly interviews.

Duration of the full time course is 1 year. Part time 2 years.

More about aquaculture


Aquaculture is a broad term that includes fish farming as well as catching and farming of other marine products like crabs, lobsters, shrimps and so on. In case of fish farming one gets to hatch the fish eggs and then permit them to grow into regular sized fishes. But that involves a lot many activities that are to be done very precisely for perfect growth of the fishes. One needs to maintain the controlled environment, feed the fishes and regularly take care of the fishes. Once they are grown up a bit they might be released to rivers or reservoirs.

About the course


As part of the course you will get to do a course work that will include a paper on research methodology. Two more papers will be on the subject. On completion of course work will have to write a dissertation based on the research done by you on aquaculture. Based on the dissertation report an oral exam is conducted and your research will be declared successful or otherwise.

After M.Phil you have numerous opportunities in research in fisheries science. You can also undertake a PhD program in a relevant field. Otherwise you can get into the industries and get engaged in fish farming as a manager, engineer or even as a scientist.
