Overview
Electroplating is the process of depositing a thin film of metal coating over another for the purpose of preventing the base metal from rusting and to give it a polished surface finish. The entire process makes use of electricity to achieve the result. Electroplating is a very important process in the metal surface finishing industry. The process not only adds to the aesthetic value of the finished metal surface but also saves it from getting deteriorated due to environmental conditions. The certification course in electroplating is a basic level course that doesn't require too many qualifications to undertake this course. It is also easy to get a job in this trade as electroplaters are required in most metal finishing industries.
Eligibility and course duration
Minimum qualification required is pass in class 10th. It helps if you are 10+2 pass in the science stream. Duration of such courses is generally 1 year.
More about the course
The is a useful course in acquiring the necessary skills in electroplating. Through theory classes and practical training you are made aware of what is meant by electroplating and how electricity helps in depositing a coat of metal over another object. You are taught about negative and positive charges of electricity. You learn how the metallic ions travel through the electrolytic solution and get deposited on the surface that has to be electroplated. You will get to know about the different electroplating processes like nickel plating, zinc plating and copper plating. There are topics on electrochemistry, corrosion, surface preparation, rinsing, cleaning, anodizing, surface protection, electroplating equipment, etc. You are taught about defects in plating and safety precautions to be observed. You also get to learn of the uses of electroplating in the metal finishing industry and why it is so commonly used. Some of the properties other than corrosion protection and aesthetics that get improved by electroplating are: abrasion resistance, wear resistance and lubricity.
Job opportunities
Electroplaters have opportunities in most of the metal finishing industries. They can find employment in industries manufacturing automobiles, sanitary fittings, artificial jewellery, coins, kitchen utensils, aviation components, electronic components, hard drives and many more. There is a huge scope for self employment too, as one can open one's own electroplating workshop. Those having precision skills in electroplating are highly valued by the metal finishing industry. After this course you can seek for post graduate diploma programs in similar fields.
