Overview
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing is a field that is making rapid inroads in every day activity of our daily existence. The GIS technology is finding many applications in the fields of engineering, telecommunications, transportation, military, traffic management, agriculture, mining, weather forecasting, urban planning, resource management and so on. Geographic Information Science involves the capture, storage, analysis and presenting of spatial and geographic data for a number of applications. The course provides a comprehensive knowledge about the applications of GIS and remote sensing technology to graduates and postgraduates coming from a host of backgrounds.
M.Sc or M.Tech in physics, math, geology, geophysics, agriculture, forestry, environmental science Or graduate in civil, electronics & communication, computer science, IT, geoscience, mining and architectural engineering. The selections are based on academic merit. Experience in the field of GIS is highly desirable.
Duration of the course is 12 months. Some courses are of 10 months duration.
More about the course
Through this course you get to understand the principles of remote sensing and geographic information science. You learn the use of spatial data for a host of applications based on GIS technology. You will learn about key technology tools for capturing, storing and analysing spatially referenced data. You will be exposed to new techniques and methods. You will be gaining skills in developing the necessary tools, modelling and presenting the spatial data for identification and addressing of issues encountered during your professional practice. The program is intended for those with or without the experience of GIS in their past undergraduate or graduate programs. The course is also suitable for those working in the government departments concerning environmental protection, urban planning, traffic management, managing land and water resources, natural management, ecosystem services, etc. A number of specializations are there. A few among them are; satellite imagery and photogrammetry, human settlement analysis, water resources management, forest resources analysis, ecosystem analysis, etc.
Job opportunities
Undergoing this course opens up opportunities in the field of research, academics as well as employment in a host of work areas. You would get opportunities in both the private and the government sector in the areas already mentioned above and a few more such as meteorology, natural hazard management, archaeology, market research and social as well as medical sciences. There are M.Phil and PhD courses for those looking for greater specialization in the field and for a career in research or teaching.
