Overview
In recent years with the development of satellite and other space based technology the field of remote sensing has started spreading its wings and has given us with lot many applications benefitting mankind and the environment surrounding us. Remote sensing is a science that deals with the collection of information about geographical features, land masses and other phenomenon without coming in direct physical contact with them. It's done through satellite systems by using devices such as cameras, scanners, radars, sonars, lasers, radiometers, seismographs, magnetometers, thermal devices and other sensing equipment. Geographic information system (GIS) on the other hand is a computer based system that digitally compiles the information collected by remote sensing and using them for monitoring, analyzing and implementing.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in civil, geoinformatics, computer science, electronics & communication, electrical, agriculture, IT or M.Sc in geography, geology, geophysics, environmental science, oceanography and other related fields. Admissions are based on merit/GATE/entrance tests.
Duration of the course is 2 years.
More about the course
In this course you get a thorough understanding of the subject of remote sensing and GIS and their numerous applications. Remote sensing has provided our scientists with eyes and ears to look at our planet from space using space based technologies like GPS and others. GIS helps in mapping those information digitally and combined with remote sensing provides mankind with a cutting edge technology in solving various environmental and location based issues at macro level. These technologies are rigourously being utilised in areas such as oceanography, environmental engineering, coastal management, disaster management, agriculture, forestry, hydrology, urban planning and land management.
Some of the topics for study are photogrammetry, remote sensing, GIS, GPS, electronic surveying, digital image processing, geo-statistical methods and database management. Electives to choose are microwave remote sensing, cartography, digital photogrammetry, non-topographic photogrammetry, applications of remote sensing, etc.
Career opportunities
This is one field where the demand for trained manpower is more than that's available. Remote sensing and GIS is a pioneering field and one can endeavour to explore one of the numerous sectors like networking communication, environment and resource management, disaster management, geology and exploration, agriculture, water resources management and not the least infrastructure and utilities management. There are a number of governmental and non-governmental organizations working in these areas where one can get work. You can also go for further research and a PhD degree will be very useful in this respect.
