Course Description of Master of Science in Soil Science & Agricultural Chemistry
The post graduate course aims at imparting knowledge about developing sustainable agricultural production methods. Program focuses on soil importance and renewable resources. The extensive study enables students to understand the soil structure, its properties, utilization of soil and soil management for benefits on mankind. Ever increasing demands for soil for food production and soil degradation has lead to high demands for experts in the concerned areas. Water crisis, pollution and changing climatic conditions has made soil indispensable for its conservation. Program provides trained hands in agricultural sectors for efficient land usage and students imbibe knowledge on all aspects of soil features such as physical, chemical and biological properties.
Eligibility Criteria for the course
Students with Bachelors degree in B.Sc /Agriculture/ Forestry with minimum of 50% in aggregate from a recognized university are eligible. Admission is through entrance test and interview.
Additional Information of the course
Soil stores water, nutrients for plants and provides shelter for organisms. Soil helps in recycling of elements for plant growth and acts as filters for wastes. Soil is the support system for life existence and forms the vital foundation for survival of all living creatures. Soil professionals play an important role in conservation and i judicious management of soil resources. The course is designed to enable students to keep pace with latest developments in the concerned areas for present and future needs. The topics delivered includes soil mineralogy, soil genesis fertilizer use soil erosion, soil conservation, radio isotopes, crop studies and bio fertilizers.
The course is interdisciplinary and emphasizes on understanding effects of soil degradation, prevention and protection of soil from erosion. The program highlights on the study of proper organic utilization and use of organic wastes for crop growth. The study subjects covers soil formation, its classification, soil hydrology, soil ecology, mapping and land evaluation. Focus is laid on understanding of fertilizers, manures and maintenance of soil fertility and structure. The course equips students with strong foundation in soil improvement and sustainable agricultural production. Training is imparted in remote sensing of soils and soil water management.
Job Prospects
Students find ample jobs in the areas of soil conservation departments. Forestry, agricultural sectors, soil water management department, educational institutes, mine operation reclamation, landscape developments, soil testing laboratories, archaeology, crop production. They find jobs as soil scientists, soil researchers, soil surveyor, soil water conservationist, landscape developer, professor.
