The program is of two years duration and aims at providing theoretical and practical knowledge on horticulture fruit production and all aspects of post harvesting. The students gain an understanding of preparing the soil for growing crops, cultivation, study after produce and its protection. The training involves in students getting ground knowledge in agriculture in the relevant areas to face the problems and solve them scientifically. The course equips students to study further in research areas to face the challenges in the agricultural sectors and find solutions scientifically.
The students should have completed B.Sc in Agriculture/horticulture/biotechnology/plant science/B.Tech in food and technology with 50% aggregate from a recognized university. The students have to attend entrance test and an interview. The student should possess keen interest in growing plants, have the ability to problem solving issues, good observational skills, patience and work for long hours.
The course covers the areas of horti fruit production and post harvesting study. The training imparts knowledge on crop production, its protection, storage, processing, packaging, distribution and marketing. The course includes the study subjects crop production, logistics, supply chain management, research methods, global trade, product innovation, dissertation, physiology and pathology, personal development and planning. The study focus on perishable and non-perishable foods, post harvest product losses, statistics, seed technology, engineering applications, food science, food preservation technology, drying of foods and biotechnology. Emphasis is laid on the study of plant growing, soil preparation, planting seeds, plant propagation, and crop production. The curriculum includes classroom lectures, hands on experience, fields/industrial visits, seminars, group discussions, assessments and examinations. Students gain insights on the food products necessity to the society. The program trains students in communication skills and in interpersonal abilities to interact with professionals, agriculturalists, agri -business executives, marketing managers etc. They are trained to improve agricultural production and help in reducing harvest losses. The program imparts knowledge on add values to the product nutrition, equips them with business aspects and trade of horticultural produce.
