Overview
Marine electronics and communication equipment are devices and systems designed to work in marine environments. Ships, ocean vessels, offshore oil platforms, cruise liners, frigates, yachts and even submarines form part of such marine environments. Some such devices used by the marine bodies for effective communication and navigation are radio transmitters, sonars, marine radars, GPS, autopilot systems, gyrocompass, magnetic compasses and a lot more. The above course not only provides you the opportunity to work on offshore vessels, but also fetches you jobs onshore in the ship building industry, dry docks and other onshore facilities. As an electronics and communication engineer you will be into maintenance and servicing of all such electronic devices.
Eligibility and course duration
Pass in 10+2 or an equivalent qualification from a recognized board, with a minimum of 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Math. Admission to the course is through entrance tests and/or merit of marks obtained in 10+2.
Duration of the course is 4 years, covered in 8 semesters.
More about the course
The undergraduate program is very much useful for those who are passionate about working in ships and other offshore vessels as an electronics and communication engineer. It is a broad based course that familiarizes you with the other branches of engineering like electrical and mechanical. It exposes you to the working of ships, its engines, generators and other electrical and electronic equipment fitted in ships. You are trained on electrical and electronic circuits, handling and operation of various kinds of communication equipment, fault analysis and snag rectification. There will be opportunities for practical demonstration in laboratories and workshops regarding the various kind of electronics and communication equipment used in marine environments. You get to learn of the special care that marine electronic devices require because of the deteriorating effect of saltwater on electronic circuitry. They are mostly waterproof or water resistant.
Jobs and opportunities
A marine electronics and communication degree course opens up avenues for you primarily in the shipping business in merchant navies, ship building industry, shipyards, offshore oil platforms, luxury cruise liners and other oceanography vessels. There is also the opportunity to go for government jobs in the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and other marine organizations. Other than the marine industry, one can also seek a career in the electronics manufacturing industry, semiconductor industry, software business and the telecommunication industry. You can go for further studies by enrolling for M.E. and M.Tech programs.
