M.Tech Hydraulic Engineering

Wish to take up a postgraduate program in the field of water resources or hydraulics? Want to work in the field of designing of hydraulic structures and their development? Here in this page find the details of the course M.Tech in Hydraulic Engineering.

Course Name: M.Tech Hydraulic Engineering
Group: M.Tech.
Stream: Engineering
Course Category: Civil
Duration: 2 Years

Overview

Hydraulics is a specialized branch of the civil engineering field. Hydraulic engineering concerns with the flow of fluids, especially water and sewage too. It uses the principles of fluid mechanics for application in transportation, collection, control and regulation of water. The dams, bridges, canals, channels and drainage systems that civil engineers build, take into consideration the principle of hydraulics. Most of them make use of gravity for affecting the flow of water or sewage. Then there are spillways and outlets from dams, canals for irrigation and cooling systems for thermal and nuclear power plants that too are designed by a hydraulic engineer.

Eligibility and course duration

Bachelors degree in the field of civil engineering. Admission to the course is through GATE scores and at times through entrance test conducted by the concerned institute.

The duration of the course is 2 years.

More about the course

The principle on which hydraulic engineering is based upon is that of fluid mechanics. One also gets to study aspects like hydrology, open channel hydraulics, sediment transportation, properties of fluid flow, behaviour of real fluids, pipelines and so on. There are concepts such as viscous flow, laminar flow, turbulence and Bernoulli's equation. You will learn how hydraulic engineering could be used to provide solutions to a number of environment related problems. Some among them are flood management, flood mapping, hydraulic modeling, coastal protection, flood alleviation, shoreline management, etc. You will learn of applications in other engineering fields, such as in mechanical and aeronautical engineering. Even traffic engineers use these principles for managing traffic flow. Whether irrigation of farmlands or providing potable water to distant places, hydraulic engineering has been instrumental in making our lives comfortable and easy. Some of the topics for study are surface water hydrology, ground water engineering, water resource planning, pipeline engineering, irrigation technology, wastewater transport and advanced hydraulic engineering.

Job opportunities

Undertaking this course enables you to take up employment in sectors such as water conservation, wastewater management and sewage disposal. You could be involved in the field of designing of dams, bridges, canal, leeves and aqueducts. You could work for the irrigation department and other related fields in the government. You may work for projects like river and coastal flood management. You may take up jobs in the automotive sector and the field of aeronautics. You may also undertake M.Phil and PhD for enhancing your career prospects in research.
