Introduction
Master of Philosophy is a post graduate degree course which teaches about research methodologies and other details of selected specialization. Optometry deals with
Study about optics, vision and related facts. It teaches about Clinical knowledge in optometry, Bias and confounders, Dispensing and Contact lens, Refraction, Anterior and posterior segment evaluation – Ocular Diseases, diagnosis, etc.
Some basics like biostatistics, epidemiology, English Proficiency, etc are also brushed up during this course. The course makes the candidates read articles and write critic reviews on them.
Duration
It is a 2 years long course that too in regular mode. It cannot be enrolled as part time or distance learning based program as it included an intensive research based studies. The complete syllabus of the course is divided into 4 semesters and each semester has its pre-defined topics to be completed.
Eligibility
Candidates holding the Bachelor's degree in Optometry or its equivalent degree are eligible for this course.
Admission Procedure
Most of the institutes take admissions through entrance examinations. Candidates performing well get short listed for an interview and then depending upon the over all performance, candidates get short listed for admission.
Further Study options
After M.Phil, the available option for higher studies is PhD, which is a complete research based course. Here, candidates can search a topic of their own interest and can conduct their research on that after approval from their supervisor. The topic for PhD must be unique in nature. Other options can be Diploma or other short term courses to learn about Optometry related instruments, etc.
Course Highlights
The course starts with study about basic topics like Computers and Information System, Special Clinics, Research Methodology, etc. Gradually, the course moves towards specialization specific topics like Visual Perception, Recent Advances in Optometry, etc. Each semester has some elective subjects to study and candidates have freedom to select any of them. These topics are Clinical Optometry, Neurological Basis and Electrophysiology of Vision, Advanced Contact Lens, Advanced Glaucoma, Low Vision Care and Vision Enhancement Techniques and Ophthalmic Photography.
Emphasis is also given to Technical Communication. The last part of course includes a short term project, general termed as Dissertation.

After completion of this course, candidates can assist eye specialists, can work in multi-specialty hospitals, private clinics, etc. They can start business related to optics, contact lenses, etc.
