Overview

Metallurgical engineering deals with extraction of metals and their ores from the deep interiors of earth. It also concerns obtaining metallic alloys from different metals by processing them suitably and thus use them for a host of industrial and manufacturing applications. In this course, among other things, one gets to study the physical and chemical characteristics of metals, alloys and other metallic compounds. A metallurgy engineer has scope both in the industry as well as in research. Some of the best institutes in the country including the IITs have courses on metallurgy. A lot many technological developments with industrial applications have been possible today because of the advancements in the field of metallurgy.

Eligibility and course duration

Graduation in a relevant stream like metallurgy, material science, production, manufacturing, mechanical engineering and chemistry. The admissions to the course are mostly based on GATE scores and entrance tests.

Duration of the course is 2 years.

More about the course

As is apparent from its name metallurgy mainly deals with metals and its various alloys. It includes both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Based on your interest you can specialize in one of the three broad fields in metallurgy. They are extractive metallurgy, physical metallurgy and mineral processing. Extractive metallurgy is about obtaining metals from its ores and concentrates by following a number of processing and purifying processes. Such processes are hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy. Physical metallurgy involves processes such as forging, casting, and forming that are used to shape metals into various sizes and shapes. It also involves strengthening and hardening processes like heat treatment, tempering and annealing. As the name suggests, mineral processing deals with the processing done to the raw minerals.

Career opportunities

Metallurgy professionals have a good many opportunities in the vast metal industry. There are a number of industries based on the extraction and manufacturing of different metals like steel, aluminium, copper and others. Some of the areas where metallurgical engineers are mostly employed in the metal industry are in production, designing, planning, quality monitoring as well as in management. The field of metallurgy also provides for numerous opportunities in research and development in the country and abroad. They are also in huge demand in industries such as aerospace for developing of suitable materials for launch vehicles, rockets and also missiles. There are enough opportunities for higher growth and one can also enrol into one of the postgraduate programs like MBA, M.Phil and PhD.
