The services of industrial technologist are mostly utilised in the engineering and the manufacturing industries. To optimize the various factors of production, industrial technologists plan and design the various manufacturing processes, equipment and the operations. Eligibility and course duration
Bachelors degree in industrial, manufacturing, production, mechanical or other related branches of engineering from a recognized institute. Work experience in the field is valued. Candidates are mostly selected through GATE scores or entrance tests.

An industrial technologist learns about lot many fields. He or she studies the principles of production, aspects of electrical, mechanical and electronics engineering, operations management, engineering economics, safety engineering, computers, informatics and so on. There are topics on quality control, quality assurance, packaging, inventory control, facility planning and more. Knowledge of all the above fields is must for an industrial engineer to effectively carry out day to day business in the production or shop floor. Other than the technical inputs, the course makes you aware of the management principles and human factors that are an absolute must for an industrial enterprise to run effectively. Skills desired of an industrial technologist are: analytical bent of mind, mathematical skills, knowledge of CAD, CAM and other programming software. One has to also update oneself with current technology and modern management principles for effective functioning.

Industrial technologist is not a highly popular job title. Nevertheless, they are in huge demand in most industries, especially the manufacturing ones. Even though one graduates as an industrial technologist, most of the job titles in this field are typically named as production supervisor, plant manager, production engineer, quality manager, process technologist and so on. Most of the job openings in this field are in the manufacturing plants, engineering consultancies, engineering firms, design firms, retail organizations, utility industry, pharma companies and others.
