M.Sc. Statistics is a unique course with more focused specialization and there are only few colleges and universities in India offering this course but do not worry, you need only one seat. It is a two years regular post graduate course and has narrow range of job prospects.
Being a Statistician, candidates will get opportunity for many big or small firms including government organizations but the role will be basically very much analytical. You need to collect and arrange data and then to draw conclusion. For your information, these jobs can also be suits for candidates with even graduation in the same field but higher qualification will get paid higher obviously.
Course Duration
As the course is equivalent to any other Post Graduate course, it has 2 years regular duration for candidates. Many institutes also offer this as part time course.
Eligibility
Candidates with valid graduation degree in related course like B.Sc. Statistics, B.Sc. Mathematics, etc. are eligible for this course. The minimum passing marks may vary from institutes to institutes. Candidate must have thorough knowledge and excellent grip over mathematic calculations like calculus.
Course content
The course includes thorough study of statistics and teach students about collection of data, organizations and analysis then interpretation from that data. It also teaches about data presentations.
The whole course is divided into 4 separate semesters and each semester has 6 months duration. The subject details are as follows-
Semester 1This will start from the commencement of the course till first 6 months. The subjects will be-
- Ancillary Mathematics
- Measure Theory and Mathematics
- Distribution Theory- Theory as well as Practical
- Matrix Algebra and Numerical Analysis (Practical)
- Computer Programming (Practical)
Semester 2This will starts after the exams of 1st Semester and will end by another 6 months. The subjects will be-
- Inference l
- Sample surveys
- Linear Models and Regression Analysis
All these three subjects have theory as well as practical sessions.
Semester 3It is a start of second year. The subjects will be-
- Inference ll
- Design of Experiments
- Time series Analysis
Again all these three subjects have theory as well as practical sessions.
Semester 4 This will be the last semester of the course. Subjects will be as follows-
- Multivariate Analysis
- Econometrics and Economic Statistics
- Environmental Statistics
