Introduction
Optometry is a branch of medical line with deals with the study about Eye and eye care and lead to the eye care professions. The course is designed to create educated, autonomous and regulated Optometrists. Candidates learn everything about eyes, their structure, functioning, disorders, etc. It includes study about refraction, visual/ ocular problems, their detection, diagnosis and rehabilitation or management using various optical devices like contact lens, spectacles and low vision devices.
These candidates get trained through this course for using various optical instruments for treating visual defects, for conducting eye tests, providing vision therapy, low vision rehabilitation, etc.
Being a Masters course, it is designed to improve the knowledge of candidates about Clinical diagnosis, Vision Science, Optometric Management Practices, etc.
The course also gives an opportunity to get specialized in different areas of optometry like pediatric optometry, contact lenses, practice management, low vision, etc.
Eligibility
A candidate holding Bachelors in Optometry (B. Optometry) degree from a recognized institute is eligible for this course. Some institutes also consider the related course for admission. The minimum qualifying marks must be equal for higher than 55% as an aggregate.
Admission Procedure
For admission, most of the institutes conducts entrance examinations. These can be national level, state level or even institute level. Candidates get call for entrance examination after submitting their duly filled application form and those who perform well get short listed for interview session and then for admission.
Duration
The duration for this course is 2 years. These 2 years are combination of both theoretical study classes and practical training sessions.
Further Study options
Candidates get trained for conducting research through this course; hence they can pursue PhD after completion of this course. PhD gives an opportunity to conduct research on the selected topic in their own field and it enhances the job prospects also.

The course starts with some basic topics like General Anatomy And General Physiology, Geometrical Optics, Physical Optics and Lighting, Basic Biochemistry. Candidates also learn about Computer Science and Functional English during initial phase of the course.
Ocular Anatomy, Ocular Biochemistry, Ocular Physiology and Basic Pharmacology are specific topics for this course. Candidates also learn about Pathology and Microbiology particularly related to Optometric.
The later part of course teaches about Optometric Instrumentation, Optometric Optics, Ocular Diseases, Dispensing Optics, Clinical Examination of the Visual System, etc.
