Introduction
M.D.S is a Master course or a Post Graduate degree in the field of Dentistry with a full name as 'Master of Dental Surgery'. The specialization of Prosthodontics deals with study about dental diagnosis, treating problem related to teeth and mouth and their prevention. Candidates also learn about tooth decay and its removal, filling of tooth cavities, tooth x-ray examinations, placing of protective plastic sealants on child teeth, repair of fractured teeth, etc.
Study about corrective surgery on gums, surgery of supporting bones for treating gums and their diseases, etc.
Candidates who are capable of taking proper measurements and impressions of jaws and teeth using face bows, recording devices, dental articulators, etc for determining the actual shape ad size of dental prostheses are suitable for this course.
Duration
Unlike most of the post graduation course, it is having 3 years duration. These 3 years are divided into 6 different semesters. Each semester is having scheduled theory and practical sessions to enable better learning of candidates.
Eligibility
Candidates holding B.D.S. (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) from a institute recognized by Dental Council of India are eligible for this course. Other equivalent qualification is also considered as eligible for this course. There is a age restriction of 21 years for this course in most of the reputed institutes.
Admission Procedure
Admission procedure includes submission of filled application form enclosed with all other required documents and then appearance in entrance examination. May institutes consider the entrance examination conducted by AICET (All India Common Entrance Test) where as some institutes conduct their own entrance tests. The final selection of candidates completely depends upon their performance in entrance examination.
Further Study options
M.D.S course gives an insight about research; hence interested candidates can pursue PhD in Dentistry if they want to pursue higher studies after completion of their post graduation.
Course Highlights
Candidates learn about Applied Anatomy, Pathology, Physiology, Bio statistics, etc as initial part of this course. It also includes complete denture prosthodontics, fixed prosthodontics, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, Partial Denture Prosthodontics and many other related topics.
Apart from these theoretical studies, candidates also have some practical sessions to learn about setting of teeth in complete denture or balanced occlusion. They also learn about fixed partial denture work through typodont and to remove partial dentures through lab sessions.
Job aspects
They can work in dental clinics, polyclinics having dental care departments and can start their own private clinics.
