Overview
Over the years, remote sensing has brought in revolutionary changes on how we perceive our environment. All this has been possible because of the development in space technology that has enabled man to put spacecrafts on orbit around the earth. The spacecrafts have been providing us with a clear picture of the earth's environment, distribution of its resources and other geographical features. Remote sensing has been helpful in a variety of other tasks including agriculture, urban development, water management, oceanography and even defence. Remote sensing through wireless sensor networks has provided an additional dimension other than that through satellite technology. These are the land based sensors that are connected through wireless network and are very effective especially in cases where satellite technology has no access.
Eligibility and course duration
B.E./B.Tech in any engineering discipline or MSc in math, physics or computer science. Admissions are through GATE score, entrance tests or merit.
Duration of the program is 2 years.
More about the course
Postgraduate courses in remote sensing and wireless sensor networks acquaint you with the various techniques of remote sensing. For pursuing this field of study, it is expected that the students have a strong background in mathematics. The courses explain you how remote sensing can be instrumental in protecting our environment and how it plays a very important role in the sustainable development of an economy. Since the last few years, remote sensing had been playing its part in saving the environment from degradation. Whether through airborne and space borne devices or through thousands of land based wireless sensor networks, remote sensing has given a new perspective to the global environment by collecting data for monitoring, analyzing and using it for decision making.
The topics on which you are familiarized are on remote sensing, imaging systems, pattern recognition, wireless networking, geographical information system, microwave engineering, biochemical sensors, global positioning systems and many more. The course curriculum also includes an end of the course project work and dissertation.
Job opportunities
There are a number of opportunities in the field in the various government departments concerned with urban planning, land management, agriculture, traffic management, oceanography, weather monitoring, forestry, space exploration, disaster management, mining and so on. There are opportunities in the non-governmental sector too. There is a huge possibility for research in the field. A doctoral degree in the form of PhD will be very much effective for pursuing research.
