About the course
The PG Diploma course in Pain and Palliative Medicine / care offers students the option to study pain and palliative medicine / care in either adults or children. Students choosing the full pediatric option must be working in pediatrics and will be required to choose the 3 pediatric modules.
Eligibility Criteria
- The basic qualification for pursuing Post Graduate Diploma Pain and Palliative Medicine course is a pass degree in MBBS degree or equivalent qualification recognized by the MCI (Medical Council of India) or any of the State Medical Council.
- Post graduate doctors and B.Sc / GNM qualified nurses are also eligible to pursue this course.
- Those who are interested / engaged in starting new pain and palliative medicine / care services or who want to strengthen the quality of medicine / care in existing medical services can also pursue the course.
The duration of Post Graduate Diploma Pain and Palliative Medicine course is of 2 years.
The learning process
The most of the learning process will be by the patient's bedside, in the wards, in the outpatient department and at patient's homes. In addition to home visits, the participants are also required to attend some peripheral pain and palliative medicine clinics in some towns.
There will be one or two academic exercises every day. Majority of the subjects will be covered in the form of interactive tutorials. Periodically, the participants will be expected to make short presentations on some of the subjects as well as to present interesting report of patients and their problems.
All of the pain and palliative medicine / care cannot be covered in academic program. The participants are encouraged to explore problems arising during clinical work and initiate academic discussions. The institutes provide enough flexibility with the academic program.
At the beginning of the course, the participants are handed over a book called ‘introducing pain and palliative care'. In addition they can access the departmental library and some other academic sites to learn more about this PG Diploma course.
Log book
The participants are required to maintain a patient's log book of at least five reports and it should include initial evaluation, plan of treatment and progress over the period studied.
Assignments
The participants will be given at least one assignment per week. The participants are also encouraged to use the library as well as the internet which will help them to complete assignments.
