Women in India are a deprived lot. They lack education, good health, equality in opportunities and have to mostly suffer subjugation from menfolk, both at home and outside. The gender ratio between men and women is very much against the fair sex. In many societies in the country, daughters are considered as burden. People still indulge in sex determination tests to prevent the birth of a girl child. In recent times there have been many initiatives by the government to create awareness among the general population in favour of the girl child. ‘Beti Bachao and Beti Padao' is one such initiative by the government. The certification course in empowering women through self-help groups is also one such endeavor in the same direction.
