Overview

A foundryman is a trade generally associated with the foundries. Foundries are used for a variety of purposes including producing metal castings. These castings are produced by pouring the hot melted metal into moulds of different shapes and sizes and then allowing it to cool. The solidified castings are then removed from the moulds. A person associated with such a task in the foundry is known by the term foundryman. To become a foundryman, one requires specialized training such as the certification courses. Eligibility and course duration

Pass in class 10th with science and mathematics in a 10+2 scheme. It is a 1 year course, divided into 2 semesters. Aptitude for working in tough environmental conditions on shop floors in factories is essential for a satisfactory career in this field.

Objectives of the course

The student gets to learn about the safety features while working in a foundry and related work areas in a factory. One learns of the personal protective gear that is to be used while working in such hazardous zones inside a factory. What are the different types of fire extinguishers, when and how to use them is taught to the students. They learn preparing mould cores made up of sand. Learn about different kinds of furnaces and how to operate them. They will be learning about different metals like iron and aluminium that are mostly used for castings and the temperature at which they melt. They learn the duties and roles as an unskilled and semi-skilled worker in the shop floors. Trainees are also trained on English language skills to understand the technical terminologies that are used in the engineering sector. Other than that communication skills and computer literacy of the students are also taken care of during this certification program. They are provided with an ITI certificate at the end of the course.

Job prospects

Foundrymen are readily absorbed by the industry for various job profiles. The industries that employ them are manufacturing, automobile, ship building & repair, railways, civil construction, defence, fabrication and in organizations like BHEL, BEML and NTPC. They are also absorbed in the capacity of apprentice. The private industry too employs them en-masse. One can also get into a lateral diploma program for enhancing one's career.
