Guidance, navigation and control is the branch of engineering that deals with navigation and control of mostly space bound vehicles like aircraft, guided missiles, rockets and spacecraft. To a certain extent it also pertains to movement of land based vehicles and ships. The field of guidance, navigation and control is of utmost value in matters related to the control and movement of every air and space bound vehicles. It is beyond human capabilities to control them, considering their very high speeds and quick reaction time needed. It also needs a very high degree of precision, which again is beyond human capability.

Eligibility and course duration


An engineering degree in aerospace, electronics, instrumentation & control and other related disciplines. Intake to the M.Tech program is based on marks obtained in graduation and a valid GATE score.

The duration of the program is 2 years.

Through this M.Tech program, you come to understand what exactly is meant by guidance, navigation and control. You understand their role in applications involving remote control and automatic operation of all air and space bound vehicles. You learn how these features are beneficial in greatly reducing the workload of operators, controllers and pilots. They enable saving in fuel costs, smoothing turbulences, etc. By the term guidance, you learn that it is the desired path of travel a vehicle is required to follow. By navigation, you understand determining the vehicle’s current location and velocity in a two or three-dimensional spaceframe. Control refers to the actions that keep the vehicle in a designated direction or velocity and kind of steers the vehicle to its designated target or destination. A few topics that are worth noting are- Dynamics of linear systems; digital control; aerospace navigation; introduction to flight; control theory; process control; missile control systems; and advanced instrumentation.

Undertaking this program mostly leads you to a career in the aviation and the aerospace industry. In the country, there is a lot of scope in this field. You may get to work with central organizations like ISRO and DRDO that are working towards the development of technologies for space-based programs. The defence services and the private sector that is into the development of guidance, navigation and control equipment are viable alternatives. A PhD or and Mphil degree is what you may opt for, beyond this course.
