Overview
Bachelor of Engineering in Architecture is an engineering course which deals with design and construction of buildings. A would be architectural engineer gets to learn how to get involved in the planning and design stage and oversee the construction of the building or structure. Most architectural wonders, modern or historical, are a product of an amalgamation of various branches of engineering like electrical, mechanical and civil with the principles of design. As such an architectural engineer has to explore other disciplines like electrical, mechanical too. Because of the similarity of construction activity there's a lot of things common between civil and architectural engineering. But the latter focuses mostly on buildings and structures, whereas civil engineering encompasses a wider field and focuses on most things related to infrastructure.
Eligibility and course duration
Passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry and Math. A strong background in Math and Physics is essential. Admission is through entrance exams. Duration of course is 4 years.
More about the course
A strong grounding in subjects like math, surveying, drafting and computer programming is essential for success in this field. An architectural engineer works along with other engineers and oversees the construction of the building. They see various aspects while coming up with a construction. They see to it that safety and environment goals meet design parameters. They come up with buildings that are resistant to earthquake and other natural forces. They focus on designs that incorporate environmental factors such as structural integrity, power, lighting, water, air conditioning, ventilation and fire safety. The focus these days is on coming up with sustainable building designs that are environment friendly.
Employment opportunities
In a developing country like ours, construction activity never ceases or saturates. With this in backdrop, more and more buildings continue to come up and older buildings get demolished. The demand for architectural engineer thus continues to grow. Most architectural engineers get work in the construction business. They work on either new building projects or get into renovating existing structures. With each passing day the trend is more on building modern structures where technology has been put to its best use. Here lies the opportunity for an architectural engineer. Because of their grounding in various disciplines of engineering, it's they who come up with the best engineering and design solutions. You can further your career in this field with doing post graduate courses like M.E. Architecture and Ph.D Architectural Engineering.
