Overview
This is a post graduate certificate program for building up skills in copy editing and proof reading. Copy editing and proof reading are somewhat similar in nature but are entirely different tasks. Both concerns with finding mistakes in written materials that are to be given for printing. However, they differ on the degree of editing work. In copy writing, the written material is checked for every kind of errors, whether punctuation, spelling, grammar, sentence structure, spacing, styling, etc. before being given for proof reading. Whereas during proof reading, very minor errors that are still left over after copy editing are corrected. Proof reading is the last stage before the publication is given the go ahead for final printing.
Eligibility and course duration
Graduation in any discipline. you should be able to handle computers and word processing software. It helps if you have great language skills.
It takes a minimum of 6 months to complete the entire syllabus.

In the publication industry, copy editing and proof reading are quite popular vocations. Before a book, magazine or a newspaper is sent for printing it is essential that the written material be checked for flaws that inadvertently creep in while the material is being prepared. So immediately after the material is written or prepared, it is sent to the copy editors who scan every sentence and word for possible grammatical, spelling, punctuation and syntax errors. If required, the complete material is rewritten by the copy editors. Once the copy editors have done their job, the proof is now sent to the proof readers for minute errors that may still be left. Proof readers kind of do the final fine tuning of the material without much changes in the content.
Here in this course you learn the task of both the copy writers as well as proof readers. You are introduced to the concepts of language editing, manuscript preparation, copy editing and proof reading techniques and the use of word processing software for doing the editing and proof reading works.
Job prospects
Most of the jobs in the field of copy editing and proof reading are in book publishing houses, printing presses, newspaper agencies, magazines and periodical publications. Desktop publishing (DTP) too provides for considerable job as well as self-employed opportunities. A few other jobs are in advertising and public relation departments.
