Overview
Instrumentation is that field of engineering, which specializes in measuring and capturing data with the help of measuring instruments. The primary purpose of instrumentation is to monitor and control a host of machineries and equipment. Equipping these machines with monitoring instruments helps in improving the efficiency, reliability and safety of operation. Instrumentation is finding a big role in the field of control engineering. Every automated system that you see today has been made possible because of the role played by instrumentation engineering. An instrumentation technologist or engineer has an important role to play in automated industries, as they design and integrate the system by installing various sensors, recorders, transmitters, controllers and display systems for monitoring and controlling the various process variables.
Eligibility and course duration
A post graduate degree in the field of instrumentation engineering and other related disciplines. You will have to appear for an entrance test and interview for getting selected for the course.
Duration of the course is 3-5 years.
More about the course
Instrumentation playing an important role in the field of control engineering and automation, there is a lot of scope for research and developing newer applications. The role of instrumentation is increasing in fields as diverse as defense, aeronautics, space research and medical science. Whether it is a blood glucose level monitor, a smoke detector or an altimeter in an aircraft, the field is finding increasing applications. Some of the specializations on which a PhD project can be undertaken in this field are sensor design & development, biomedical instrumentation, digital signal processing, intelligent control, process control, control systems and signal processing, sensor signal processing, intelligent measurement systems and so on. The independent research work has to be undertaken under the guidance of a guide or supervisor. At the end of the program a dissertation has to be submitted and defended in front of the research committee.
Job prospects and opportunities
The field of instrumentation has a lot many prospects in a number of fields. If you wish to work in the industries, then you have options such as the aeronautical industry, space applications, robotics, automobile engineering, medical electronics, manufacturing sector, process industries, security services, traffic monitoring and a lot more. As a research scholar you may otherwise decide to join a research and development based career in the field of instrumentation. A career in academics, as a lecturer or professor, is also a worthwhile option.
