Introduction
Ph.D. is a research-based doctoral course which can be pursued after completion of Post Graduation in related field. Ph.D. in Oceanography has 2 parts or dimensions named as Marine Biology and Physical Oceanography. Candidates learn about basic marine biology, chemical processes related to it, geological and physical processes related to Oceanography, etc in this course.
The course includes 3 main parts- the Theoretical study of available literature, conducting research after planning and then writing of the thesis.
Once the thesis is submitted, candidates need to defend their Ph.D. for successfully completing their Ph.D.
Eligibility
Candidates holding Post Graduation degree in Marine Biology or Oceanography are eligible for this course. Candidates must have completed their master's course from a registered and recognized institute and should have secured at least 60% marks as an aggregate to become eligible for this course. Being research course, most of the institutes do not have any age restriction for this course and interested candidates can pursue the same as per their availability and interest.
Admission Procedure
Admissions can be availed in multiple ways. The common thing is to submit the duly filled application form before the last date. This application must be enclosed with all other required documents and application fee.
Admissions are offered through screening on the basis of performance of candidates in entrance tests and interviews. Entrance tests can be of national, state or even institute level.
Some self-sponsored projects are also available where candidates will not get any government stipend to complete their research work.
Duration
The duration of this course ranges between 3-5 years depending upon the project, institute, etc. In some exceptional cases, the duration can get extended for some valid reason subject to approval from the supervisor.
Further Study options
After completion of Ph.D. and submission of the thesis, candidates interested in research work ca continue their work in the form of Post Doctoral research degree.
