Scope of disability studies
The idea of this research program is to come up with solutions that will help the disabled and the differently abled to get easily assimilated within the society. Instead of viewing disability as a defect, one gets to view it in terms of a complex social, cultural and political phenomenon. It has less to do with medical or clinical perspectives on disability. How the society perceives it and how people with disability are able to cope with it is what researchers mostly work upon in this field. The scholars involved in disability research are thus instrumental in creating awareness about the disabled and their aspirations to be treated as equal members of the society and not to be looked down upon.
