Course overview
The Italian studies program leads you to an advanced learning about Italian language, Italian people, their culture, art, literature, history and politics. The field of study as well as research concerns both medieval and contemporary Italy. On undergoing this PhD program you are going to improve your skills in lot many areas. The skills learned will be useful in pursuing a career in academics, arts, research, translation and foreign policy. Some of these skills are: strong verbal and writing skills in Italian, cross-cultural knowledge about the Italian state and government, ability to communicate and converse with the people of Italian origin very fluently.
Eligibility and course duration
A master's or an M.Phil qualification in Italian studies with an element of research included in such programs. Depending on your qualifications you may have to appear for an entrance test followed by an interview.
Duration of the program is at least 3 years.

For undergoing a PhD in this field you need to first submit a research proposal. On its acceptance, in the first two semesters you mainly get to focus on coursework and courses on research methodologies that are instrumental in helping you undertake the research. As per your research topic you get to work on the history of the Italian language, its origin, Italian art and literature, people of Italy, their society and politics in the contemporary world and many more. Your work area doesn't restrict here. You may also seek to do research on Italian culture, films, drama, folklore, etc. During your research you get to work under the supervision of a research guide who helps you with the research procedure and preparing the dissertation. The dissertation is to be presented to a panel who will conduct a viva-voce to judge your research credentials. Beyond the research work there will seminars, assignments and workshops for you that will help you in gaining skills in teaching and publishing papers. There are screening of films, language training and skill training in writing, editing, etc.

No doubt, with a PhD in Italian Studies, you can very well have an academic or a research career. Other than that you can work in Italian embassies, as a translator or interpreter for the government and the business world. You can look towards a career in Italy. Or you may simply have your own institute teaching the Italian language.
