Overview
Telecommunication engineering primarily deals with designing, developing and installing of telecommunications equipment like switching systems, optical fibre cabling works, microwave transmissions and even providing telephone services. The data transmission services that we are availing have been made possible because of the advances in telecommunications engineering. Fibre optic cables, coaxial cables and twisted pair cables have been the backbone of every telecom network. It is only in recent times that wireless mode of transmissions like radio and satellite communication are getting increasingly popular and replacing wired communication in a big way. The scope for further advances in the field of telecommunications is huge and provides a PhD student a wide scope for research in a host of areas related to telecommunications.
Eligibility and course duration
An M.Tech or a Master of Engineering in Telecommunications or Electrical. Applicants have to mostly sit for an entrance test and a personal interview, where one has to satisfy the interview panel, with the purpose of PhD and area of interest for research.
Duration of the program is 3-5 years.
More about the course
The field of telecommunications provides for a number of sub-fields which can be taken up for research work by a PhD student. A few such topics in this area are: digital communication, wireless communication, wireless multimedia, digital signal processing, parallel processing, microwave transmission, fibre optics transmission, high speed protocols, network security and so on. Based on one's area of interest the applicant has to submit the research proposal. On acceptance of the proposal, the research scholar gets to work under the supervision of a research guide. Its only after finishing the coursework one gets started with the actual research. In-between the research work, one also gets to attend seminars, presentations and workshops, gets to do assignments and projects. All this while, the research scholar has to start working on the dissertation or thesis and has to submit it at the end of the course. On clearing the final viva-voce, the PhD is delivered.
Jobs and opportunities
For a PhD scholar in telecommunication engineering there are opportunities in the telecom industries as well as research and academics. There are opportunities sin the telecom equipment manufacturing business in the country or abroad. Then there are number of telecom majors like state owned BSNL, Airtel, Vodafone, Idea and others where one can seek a job at a leadership position. The government sector in its telecom ministry and departments also provide for enough opportunities.
