Petrochemicals engineering - An overview
A specialized branch of chemical engineering, petrochemical engineering deals with the processing and refining of crude petroleum into organic chemicals. Many of the organic chemicals that we know, like benzene, toluene, xylene, ethylene and propylene are obtained from petroleum through refining processes. These petrochemical products are the basis for obtaining plastics, gels, resins, lubricants, elastomers and a whole range of products. The petrochemicals industry is a growing one. A lot of technological development and research are taking place in this field to obtain better as well as new products. Petrochemical industries are located worldwide, especially in regions where there is easy availability of petroleum. The industry is growing very rapidly in India too.
Eligibility and course duration
Class XII pass from a recognized board or university with the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Math. You need to sit for entrance exams for admission to this course.
Duration of this course is 4 years.
More about the course
Being a specialized stream of chemical engineering, courses on petrochemicals are available in relatively fewer colleges in the country. Petrochemicals engineers being relatively few in numbers find it easy in getting jobs in a wide area of fields associated with the petroleum and the petrochemicals industry. As a petrochemical engineer you learn in this courses how to break down petroleum or natural gas into their base components. You then learn how to reconstruct them back into useful products such as polymers, plastics, fuel, fibres, synthetic rubber and many others. Through this course you are imparted with the necessary knowledge and expertise to carry out these refining operations.
Petrochemical engineers have job opportunities in some diverse fields. They get to work in the petrochemicals sector, petroleum, polymer and the chemical industries. They are considered as part of chemical engineers and get jobs in many fields where chemical engineers are required. Petrochemical engineers are employed in the petroleum industry, both in the upstream and the downstream sector. They work in refineries, breaking down and reconstructing the crude oil into useful products. There are opportunities both in the government and the private sector. Petrochemical engineers and scientists have good career opportunities in foreign countries too, in North America, Europe and West Asia. Gujarat in India has the best of the opportunities in this field in the country. One can also opt for postgraduate courses like M.E. and M.Tech in this field after this course.
