Course Overview
It is a postgraduate course in rock excavation engineering. This course is designed to produce skilled mining and civil engineers in the field of rock excavation engineering for the purpose of serving the mining and construction industry in the most technically effective way. In this course, the students study about subjects such as rock mechanics, advanced soil mechanics, soil exploration and testing, soil dynamics and machine foundation, etc.
Eligibility Criteria
- The basic qualification for pursuing M.Tech Rock Excavation Engineering course is a pass degree in B.E / B.Tech or equivalent examination with a minimum of 55% marks from a recognized college or university.
- Some colleges and institutes conduct an entrance examination for admission to their M.Tech degree course.
The duration of M.Tech Rock Excavation Engineering course is 2 years which is divided into four semesters with each semester lasting for a period of six months.
Some more about the course
In the last decade, the excavation industry has seen an exponential growth in India owing to rock exploration for tunnels, slopes, underground mines, surface mines, foundations for high rise buildings, railways, metros, etc.
Some of the challenges faced by the rock exploration industry are in the areas of excavations in fragile and mountain regions, deep excavations, excavation and tunneling in urban areas, management of excavations, reduction in excavation costs, etc. The professionals trained in these areas are needed to meet such challenges and contribute effectively to such a nation building activity.
The curriculum offers specialized knowledge in various geotechnical engineering topics such as ground improvement techniques, foundation engineering, underground excavations, etc.
Admission procedure
For admission to this course, candidates are required to pass an entrance examination such as GATE, IIT JEE, CCMT or another institute specific test, followed by round of group discussion. The qualifying candidates would then need to go through additional rounds of personal interview as the final stage of selection process. A few colleges have their own entrance exam and admission procedures for selecting and admitting candidates to M.Tech Rock Excavation Engineering course.
Career prospects
Successful postgraduates of the course can work as Junior Research Fellows or as Project Assistant. They can also get jobs in the private sector. They can also work as mine manager, plant supervisor, survey geologist, chief mining engineer, assistant mining engineer, etc.
