Overview
Petroleum engineering is one of those fields that provides for one of the best paying jobs in countries having substantial petroleum reserves. Even though India has moderate petroleum reserves, it has a good part of its GDP devoted to activities related to the petroleum sector for extraction of crude oil and refining into useful products. As a petroleum engineer you could be into one of the many activities related to the field such as exploration, location of reserves, drilling of site, extraction and production of crude oil or you could be working in the processing field refining petroleum into petrol, diesel and some useful chemicals. As a petroleum engineer your focus will be on maximizing the recovery of oil and gas from the reservoirs.
Eligibility and course duration
Should have passed 10+2 with physics, chemistry and math. Admissions are mainly based on entrance exams like JEE.
Duration of course is 4 years.
More about the course
A petroleum engineering course is about exploration, extraction, production and refining of crude oil and natural gas obtained from the depths of earth. It is also about designing and developing the various processes and machineries that are used for extraction and processing of the crude oil. It teaches you about the refining activities that are undertaken to obtain chemical compounds and useful products like petrol, diesel, benzene, kerosene, jet fuel, LPG, plastics, resins, etc. You will learn about the numerous sophisticated devices and equipment that are used for the various activities involved in exploration and extraction of the crude oil. It also covers topics on transportation of the petroleum from the sites to refineries located downstream for processing it into useful products. You learn of upstream and downstream sectors, the upstream sectors for extraction and production of crude, whereas the downstream sector is meant for refining and processing.
Career prospects
Petroleum engineering provides for very good opportunities in the oil and gas sector. There are numerous petroleum based companies in the country both in the public and the private sector. A few such renowned companies are ONGC, BPCL, OIL, GAIL, Reliance Refineries and Essar Oil. There are jobs in extraction as well as in refineries. There are also opportunities in petroleum based chemical industries. The Gulf region provides for one of the highest paid jobs in this field. You can also undertake courses like M.E. and M.Tech. For managerial roles you can pursue an MBA.
