Formerly spelled as Oriya, Odia is the native language of the majority of the population in the Indian state of Odisha (formerly Orissa). It is also widely spoken in the neighboring states of Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal. The Odia language finds the status of official language in two states, Odisha and Jharkhand, with a million plus speakers in Jharkhand alone. As a whole, the language is spoken by more than 33 million population spread across India and the rest of the world. It also finds itself as one of the many official languages of the Indian union. Based on its rich and long history, Odia is also considered as one of the classical languages of India. It also has the distinction of not borrowing heavily from other languages.
