Odia (formerly Oriya) is the most widely spoken languages in the state of Odisha. A big segment of the population in Jharkhand too speaks the language. One of the official languages of India, it is also the official language of the state of Odisha and Jharkhand. A sizeable number of the population in states such as Andhra and West Bengal too speak the language. The Odia language is rich in history and because of its rich literary and cultural history also finds mention as one of the classical languages of India. M.Phil in Odia focuses on the in-depth study of the language, its literary and linguistics history. The M.Phil program has a research element involved in it. One gets to engage in a short term research work on an original proposal submitted by the aspirant. Based on the research undertaken, one has to write a thesis and submit it for approval. Only on successful defending of the dissertation in a viva-voce with the research committee that the M.Phil degree is awarded. The topic chosen for research has to be based on the rich literary history of the Odia language and literature. As part of the curriculum one gets to do the coursework first which involves among other topics, the methodology for research, literary theory and literary movements in ancient Odisha during the period 15th to 17th century and the medieval period for Odia literature, from the beginning of the 18th century to the middle of the 19th century. The M.Phil program is a valuable one in learning the rich history of the language beginning from the 3rd century BC. The course is also helpful in learning the culture, customs, traditions and literature of the Odia people down the ages.
