About organic chemistry

Organic chemistry is about molecular structure, chemical composition, reactions and properties of carbon compounds, including hydrocarbons and compounds containing elements like oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, silicon and sulphur. Research in this field is creating newer molecules and is also increasing the scope of existing compounds by exploring their properties. Growth in this field is also instrumental in the development of the country's economy as it has a direct effect on most industries based on this field. Organic chemistry has its role in agriculture too. Due to development in biotechnology, we are now able to develop disease and drought resistant crops. Some of the subjects to be studied in this course are: organic, physical and inorganic chemistry, stereochemistry, spectroscopy, separation techniques, photo chemistry, analytical chemistry and so on.

Jobs in organic chemistry

Most of the jobs in the field of organic chemistry are available in pharmaceutical companies, petrochemical industries, plastics, research institutions, schools, colleges, government labs and in biotechnology based industries. Many consumer products based industries manufacturing soaps, detergents and cosmetics, employ professionals trained in this field. Most schools and colleges employ teachers and lecturers teaching chemistry having postgraduate degrees in organic chemistry. Pharmaceutical companies like Dr. Reddy's lab, Cipla, Biocon, Sun Pharma, Cadila Health are good hunting ground for organic chemistry professionals. Those ambitious about higher education and research can enroll themselves for M.Phil and Ph.D programs. They can look forward to a career in research in various government research laboratories in positions such as research scientist and research chemist.
